IRON MOUNTAIN HIKE FROM ELLIE LANE TRAILHEAD BY WAY OF RAMONA OVERLOOK
WEDNESDAY DEC 18
HIKE STARTS AT 8;30 AM
Mission Valley Carpool, if there is one, departs at 7:30 AM
We will meet at the Ellie Lane trail head off Hwy 67, 0.6 miles east of the junction of Poway Road and Hwy 67 at 8:30 . We take the Ellie Lane Trail past pastures and a pond to Wild Horse trail and then after a brief climb, Old Miner’s trail up a steady climb to Table Rock. From there we will rejoin the Ellie Lane trail and mostly steadily climb up to a saddle with great views and a feel of accomplishment for our first big summit. The hike up to this summit is challenging and more difficult than the next climb up to the top of Iron Mountain. From this saddle we will proceed down for about a half mile to then climb up a moderate hill to the Ramona Overlook for views of the Ramona Valley. We will take a rest stop at the Overlook. We then proceed down the Ellie Lane Trail to the saddle that meets up with the main Iron Mountain trail and them up switchbacks to the top of Iron Mountain. Here we will enjoy lunch looking down upon the coastal shelf and those not as energetic as us. We will then retrace our route down to the saddle, down a portion of the main Iron Mountain trail until we come to a branch single track trail which will take us back to the Ellie Lane trailhead and our cars.
This hike is about 11 miles with several long uphill climb sections that will require good conditioning and endurance. The views make it all worthwhile. There are no portapotties at the Ellie Lane Trailhead. As always, bring lots of water, wear good hiking or trail running shoes, and poles may be very useful.
